Bushenyi District health authorities are investigating a suspected case of Ebola involving a 22-year-old man who was referred to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for isolation and further assessment.
According to the Bushenyi District Health Officer, Dr Stephen Twinomugisha, the suspect travelled from Kashenshero Sub-county in Mitooma District on Saturday evening and began developing symptoms on Sunday. Dr Twinomugisha said the patient presented with symptoms associated with Ebola, including general body weakness, headache, fever, and bleeding from the eyes and nose.
He explained that the District Ebola Taskforce, chaired by Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Emmy Ngabirano, was immediately alerted and convened an emergency meeting. The team resolved to refer the patient to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for specialized care and isolation, while also cordoning off the ward at Kampala International Hospital in Ishaka, where the suspect had initially been admitted.
Samples were collected and sent for laboratory testing, as health officials await the results to determine whether the patient is infected with Ebola.
Ngabirano confirmed that the suspect is currently admitted in the isolation unit at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital and urged residents to remain calm while strictly observing Ebola Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) issued by the Ministry of Health.
Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital Public Relations Officer Halson Kagure also confirmed that one suspected case is being managed in the hospital’s isolation unit, pending laboratory confirmation. If the tests return positive, the case would add to Uganda’s confirmed Ebola cases reported since the outbreak was declared two weeks ago.
