In the news this afternoon, National Unity Platform Deputy President for Buganda region also former Butambala county legislator Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi has been granted bail after spending 6 months on remand.
Kivumbi was arrested on 22nd January 2026 just one week after the chaotic general elections which left several people injured and 7 killed from his house as security operatives raided his home and killed his supporters claiming the attacked a police station with pangas. Several other people including school going children were arrested from the same area.
Muwanga was later arraigned before the Chief Magistrate’s court in Butambala and charged with terrorism alongside several of his supporters including school going children. The accused filled their bail application in the high court before the International Crimes Division judge Suzan Okalany arguing that they haven’t been committed to the high court for trial and the offences are bailable.
He was granted a cash bail of Shs10 million while his co-accused were also granted bail of Shs1million each. Six other co-accused remain on remand after their sureties were deemed incompetent and will return on 13th July 2026 with new sureties.

The granting of bail to Muwanga and his co-accused come at a time when their lead lawyer Erias Lukwago is currently incarcerated on charges of misprision of treason and currently fighting for his life inside Luzira prison. Even after doctors and specialists at Mulago recommended that he should be flown out to for proper medication, government is still keeping him behind bars just like it did to late Kawempe North MP Muhammed Ssegirinya.
This development comes at a time when President Museveni in his recent Nation Address blatantly said he sees no reason why an accused person should be granted bail even when it’s constitutional. Museveni says when an accused is granted bail, they would threaten the witnesses and even antagonize with the investigations.
The president also used the same address to cheer and support his son the Chief of Defense Forces (CDF) Muhoozi Keinerugaba who has arrested several opposition leaders, holds them in his basement and subjects them to several tortures and other operations that have been largely condemned by forces with in Uganda and outside.
