President Museveni has this evening announced that this year’s Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations of 3rd June where the country remembers faithfuls who were killed and burnt during the brutal regime of Kabaka Mwanga in the late 1890s.
Taking to his social media pages, President Museveni announced that the decision postpone the celebrations was reached in consultation with the National Epidemic Response Taskforce owing to the outbreak of the dangerous Ebola disease which has since killed over 80 with one case having died at Kibuli Moslem Hospital in Kampala according to the ministry of health.
“This decision was made because Uganda receives thousands of pilgrims annually from Eastern Congo which is currently experiencing an Ebola outbreak. To safeguard everyone’s lives, it is essential that this important event be postponed.”-wrote Museveni
The President also encouraged those who had started trekking the journey to Namugongo from the different parts of the world to return home and wait for a later date which will be communicated. Museveni also urged the public to report any one who is sick and those with symptoms to seek medication in the health facilities.
“I encourage those who had begun their journey to return home, continue observing the precautionary measures, report anyone who is sick, and encourage those who are ill to seek medical care”-says M7
