Following the transfer of his case files to the Civilian court following the supreme court ruling that halted all proceedings against civilians in the General court martial, Besigye has ended his hunger strike that was risking his life while under detention in Luzira prisons. He appeared today with his co-accused Hajji Obeid Lutale and the were slapped with fresh charges quite different from the earlier one’s in the military court. After the successful transfer of Besigye’s case file from the General Court Martial who trial of civilians was halted by the 31st January 2025 Supreme Court ruling, Besigye and his two co-accused have been fleshly charged at the Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court. Appearing before the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s court, the charge sheet looked revised and Besigye was charged with treason. Following a revelation by the Deputy Attorney General Jackson Kafuzi yesterday that Besigye’s file had been successfully transferred by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), a production warrant was issued yesterday evening. Dr. Kiiza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale have been produced before the Chief Magistrates Court in Nakawa and slapped with treason charges. Led by Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, Lawyer Medard Lubega Ssegona among others, Besigye’s legal team had applied for a harbias corpus in the high court. In so doing, they wanted to compel court to order for the release of Besigye and Lutale because they’re in prison on an inexistent remand order since the supreme court nullified the Court Martial proceedings. The dark days of ‘panda gari’ seem to be back in Uganda having gone quiet for three years since 2022 after National Unity Platform reported forced abductions of their top leaders by men holding guns. The country last experienced these dark days mostly during the reign of President Idi Amin Dada. In the news this afternoon, former police Chief IGP John Cossy Odomelo has died from a hospital in India where he was receiving treatment. Odomelo was the Inspector General of Police from 1992-1999. It’s now a week since Besigye appeared in court looking very frail and not able to stand or walk and was just helped as he struggled to breathe. He was instead just remanded despite calls for a release order for him to seek medication. Calls of his release have gained momentum from with in and abroad as voices have urged government to consider his health before trying him.
