The Uganda U-20 Women’s National Team, the Queen Cranes, will on Sunday face hosts Ghana in a decisive first leg clash of the final round of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup African Qualifiers.
The high stakes encounter will be played at the Accra Sports Stadium, with kick-off set for 3:30 PM local time (6:30 PM East Africa). Uganda will be need a positive result away from home for better chances ahead of the return leg in Kampala.
The Queen Cranes arrived in Accra on Friday, completed their final preparations, with the technical team focusing on both tactical and physical readiness as they gear up for one of their most important matches in recent history. Head coach Sheryl Ulanda Botes expressed confidence in her team after the final training session held at the match venue, saying the players have adapted well and are mentally prepared for the challenge.
“We have had the feel of the actual stadium and the morale is positive,” Botes said. “We have covered every detail to help us get a good result. We want to do this for every girl child in Uganda and for the people of Uganda.”
She acknowledged the strength of the hosts but emphasized the importance of character in such fixtures. “We know it is going to be hard against Ghana, but these are the kind of games you need to play and show character,” she added.
Team captain Agnes Nabukenya also highlighted the team’s readiness, noting that the players have acclimatized well to the conditions in West Africa.
“The team is in good shape and we are fully focused on delivering a strong performance,” Nabukenya said.
Ahmed Hussein, the Principal Communications Officer at the Federation of Uganda Football Associations, said the team’s preparations and mindset reflect their determination to achieve a historic milestone for Ugandan football. Hussein noted that FUFA has ensured the team gets the necessary support both on and off the pitch, adding that the players understand the magnitude of the task ahead and the opportunity it presents for the country.
“This is a big moment for women’s football in Uganda,” Hussein said. “The team is well prepared and motivated to represent the country with pride. We believe they have what it takes to compete and secure a positive result.”
The outcome of the two-legged tie will determine one of Africa’s four representatives at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Poland 2026. The return leg is scheduled for Saturday, May 9, at the FUFA Stadium, Kadiba, where the Queen Cranes will hope to capitalize on home advantage as they pursue a historic qualification to the global tournament.
