The Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) has launched a probe into Nergi Solar Uganda Limited, a relatively new player in Uganda’s energy sector, over allegations of bribery, fraud, and collusion with individual government and military officials to secure a multimillion-dollar government contract.
According to preliminary reports, CID investigators suspect that Nergi Solar bribed senior government figures to influence the award of a lucrative energy infrastructure project. It is further alleged that the company managed to secure the transfer of millions of dollars in cash payments into its accounts without presenting the necessary documentation or fulfilling key contractual obligations.
Sources within the Ministry of Energy claim the company was favored despite lacking the technical capacity and experience of competing firms. The investigation also points to possible collusion with top military officials, who allegedly influenced the projects committee in Nergi Solar’s favour.
Officials have expressed concern that Nergi Solar Uganda Limited, which is believed to have established operations in the country less than a year ago, may have been formed primarily to siphon public funds rather than contributing meaningfully to Uganda’s renewable energy development.
The leadership of the CID confirmed the ongoing investigation, stating that “all allegations will be pursued to their full conclusion.” It was added that the inquiry aligns with President Yoweri Museveni’s renewed crackdown on corruption within government institutions — an effort that has already seen several senior Ugandan officials and politicians arrested in recent months.
