Ruhinda North legislator also former Deputy speaker of the 11th Parliament Thomas Tayebwa Bangirana has issued an apology to Ugandans for the sins which the house he first led as government chief for one year and later as Deputy Speaker following the death of Speaker Jacob Oulanyah in March 2022.
Speaking at Entebbe state house where the NRM CEC and Parliamentary caucus members had thronged in big numbers to formally endorse the party’s candidate for today’s Speakership elections at Kololo Independence grounds.
Despite his position attracting 16 clients who expressed interest in contesting for Deputy Speakership, all stepped down for Tayebwa to contest in today’s elections alongside West Budama Central legislator Jacob Oboth-Oboth whom the party unanimously endorsed to contest in the speakership elections today.
Speaking shortly after being endorsed by the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) it’s Apex organ and the 12th NRM parliamentary caucus, Tayebwa acknowledged that the house he led as its Deputy speaker had some short comings which greatly tainted its image and currently needs redemption from the gallows of corruption.
“…I think there’s where we had a lapse as leaders and I want to take this opportunity to apologize to the nation on behalf of the leadership of parliament because there’s where we had a lapse, there’s where we didn’t put some break, we went on a pedestal and went beyond so I need to apologize to the nation over what went wrong”- said Tayebwa
His apologies if they’re sincere come at a time when his former boss, the former speaker of Parliament Annet Anita Among is currently facing a storm where she’s accused of corruption, money laundering, illicit enrichment among others and has since had her residences around Kampala, in Bukedea and her parent’s home undergo search operations spanning to over 16 hours.
Owing to the investigations currently being done, detectives have so far seized 6 luxury vehicles belong to Anita Among, very sensitive information and money in sacks said to be in different currencies but mostly Uganda Shillings, United States Dollar and the Euros.
As Tayebwa issued apologies on behalf of parliament and Anita Among who was forced out of the Speakership race, Ugandans have been questioning the exact motives of the search operations and a probe on Anita Among while leaving Tayebwa who equally had almost the same budgets to be a free man tantamount to witch-hunt as state prepares case to pin on the Bukedea District MP who was very powerful and money was her closes ally in most of her dealings.
Unlike the very proud Anita Among who couldn’t issue such apologies to Ugandans, by Tayebwa confessing that indeed there were some lapses signal a new shift in new leadership in the 12th parliament Museveni envisions for the term 2026- 2031.
