A fire has destroyed pupils’ belongings in a girls’ dormitory at Prime Junior School in Sironko Town Council, with police investigating the cause of the Monday afternoon incident. The fire broke out at about 2:30 p.m. on November 2, 2026, in a dormitory that accommodated boarding pupils from Primary One to Primary Four before spreading to neighbouring rooms.

Elgon Region Police spokesperson Rogers Taitika said no deaths or injuries were reported, although nearly all the pupils’ property in the affected dormitory was destroyed. Police said the dormitory had been locked after the younger boarding pupils were sent home to make room for Primary Seven candidates preparing for the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), scheduled for November 3 and 4.

The fire was reportedly discovered by a Primary Seven pupil who noticed smoke coming from the roof of the locked dormitory and alerted the school headteacher, Okwir Kizito, 35. Kizito subsequently notified police. Police detectives and Scenes of Crime Officers visited the scene, led by Sironko Police Station Officer-in-Charge SP Isaac Twinomugisha and District Assistant Superintendent of Police Jude Babwetenga, the Officer-in-Charge of the Criminal Investigations Department.

The Elgon Region Fire and Rescue team also responded and extinguished the fire. According to police, all pupils’ belongings in the affected dormitory were destroyed, except for two boxes that the matron managed to rescue before the fire intensified. Taitika said investigations were underway to establish the exact cause of the fire. He urged the public to remain calm, noting that no casualties had been recorded.
