Following a raise in bus accidents involving students going for tours across the country, the latest involving pupils of King David Primary School Ndejje which crashed last night in Kapchorwa District killing 21 pupils and the Director of the School Mr. Tadeo Ssekadde, Police is now waking up and has arrested two buses this morning for over loading.
According to a statement issued by police this morning, Traffic has arrested two buses which were carrying pupils of St. Kizito Primary school heading for a tour which have become common every second term. The two drivers arrested are currently being held at CPS Kampala and will be arraigned in court and charged.
Police say the two drivers have been identified as Kimbugwe Ali who was driving bus UA 092AS carrying 110 pupils and Mutesasira Abubakari who was driving bus registration number UAN619X carrying 97 pupils. Even the fatal Kapchorwa bus is said to have been carrying 113 pupils and 13 teachers at the time of the accident when the driver lost control, veered off the road and hit a big stone on the roadside.
Uganda Police now says is working together with other key stakeholders on the guidelines aimed at improving safety of school transportation to minimize the increasing number of road crashes involving school children and this be communications in the due course once the consultative process is concluded.
The operations on the roads come just few hours after the Minister of Education Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo suspended all school organized tours until further notice.
