As the country gears up to the 2026 general elections with NRM done with holding it’s primary elections which were marred with chaos, fights and disappointments, the Electoral Commission has now made changes to the nomination of candidates. At a media briefing held at the commission headquarters in Kampala, Justice Byabakama announced nomination dates for different positions from local councils, Members of parliament to presidential candidates. Events promoter and Minister for Youth and Children Affairs Balaam Barugahara was involved in an accident in Kagadi district as he was heading to an event in Fortporatal district for a youth event. In videos and photos making rounds on social media, the Minister’s post car registration number UG400006 is seen crashed on the drivers side but the unfortunate side is that a boda boda rider who was knocked and died instantly. Government invested a whooping Shs12bn in buying post cars for 15 kings and cultural leaders across the country. One by one arrived at Kololo grounds and were handed keys to their two post cars by the Minister of Gender, Labor and Social Development Betty Amongi in an event which was graced by the Vice president Jesca Alupo. Insurance is an essential tool for protecting families from financial hardship during difficult times. In Uganda, however, very few people are covered. A recent report by the Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda shows that insurance penetration remains low, at just 0.867 percent. This is despite the sector recording impressive growth in 2024, with gross written premiums rising by 12.04 percent to about UGX 1.79 trillion. In the last two months, Uganda has experienced a surge in the number of political parties ahead of the 2026 general elections. Majority of these are seeking to front candidates in different positions including for president to put an end to Museveni’s 4-decade rule. The Anti-Corruption Division of High Court has today convicted and sentenced, the Former Chairperson Rakai District Service Commission, Mpuga David to 5 years imprisonment or a fine of UGX7.2 Million for extorting and demanding bribes from job applicants in the district. The accused solicited for UGX 20Million from a job applicant who wanted the position of Agricultural Officer. Mpuga entered into a plea bargain where he compensated the victim with UGX 30Million Shillings and will not be serving government of Uganda for the next 10 years. In the news this morning, Ugandans are the mourning the death of prominent Retired Justice of the Supreme Court Prof George Kanyeihamba a respected gem in the legal circles of Uganda and beyond boarders. Kanyeihamba has died from a hospital in Kampala where he had been admitted since early this month at the age of 86. He’s been in and out of hospital battling ill health for the last 8 years.
