President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni hosted the National Executive Committee for NRM delegates ahead of the National Delegate’s conference happening later this week on Wednesday and Thursday.
In the meeting, there was a face off between president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and former Speaker Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga who is the 1st Deputy prime minister and minister in charge of East Africa affairs and also the Kamuli district woman Member of parliament.
Kadaga who is the current 2nd National Vice Chairperson female is facing some still competition from new NRM recruit Speaker Anita Among who is determined to send the woman from Kamuli packing without fear or favor but with flavor.
When she was given a chance to address the delegates, Kadaga bold told president Museveni for double standards. She wonders why the president intervened to saved Alhajji Moses Kigongo who a contest but has failed to intervene to save her from the same.
Kadaga who reiterated that she has been a member of the NRM since it’s inception, starting as RC 1 and RC2 and later to the National Council in 1989 before she later joined the constituency assembly which made the 1995 constitution. Kadaga reminded Museveni how she sat as a back bencher for 7 years before making it to the top echelons of the party. She questions why the guidelines are changing and getting softened for Anita Among to fit in the race.
“I have been a member of this party since it’s inception. I started as a chairman of RC1 in 1989 in my village in Mbulamuti. I moved to RC2 then to the National Resistance Council. I’ve never been to any other party. All my life i have been to the NRM”- said Kadaga
The former speaker wonders how the party she has served diligently has changed the guidelines in favor of a new comer Anita Among whom she says just joined the party three years ago since crossing from the FDC.
“I think we should not have politics of expedience. When you’re feeling the expression of interest form, you’re asked what have you done for the NRM for the last 10 years. Those are the guidelines, we have not changed them. The person aspiring to this office has only worked for three years for the NRM. Whether she was doing what as an independent, that was her business but for the NRM she has only worked for three years”- a visibly angry Kadaga told Museveni.
Kadaga also got the same chance to lash at president for what she called humiliation when the president employed all the energy to make sure she the Late Jacob Oulanyah goes through as Speaker Anita Among. The party endorse Oulanyah but Kadaga stood independent.
“Just a few years ago, i was publicly humiliated in this country, the way i was removed from the office of the speaker, i took it in good strike, continued doing my work but am being followed. How much more can you press an individual?”-Kadaga further said.
She further tells Museveni that she has been engaging him on her battle with Kadaga urging him to intervene and save her from the humiliation but the president has been doing hide and seek without giving attention to the matter which she says will leave the party bruised.
“I have been talking to you about this matter for some time and informed you that and if this matter goes to a contest, it will cause serious problems in my community. People here may think you’re fighting an individual but you’re fighting a bigger community and that’s not right for the politics of Uganda. If it seem that in this party loyalty is not important, integrity is not important, commitment is not important, that’s a message your sending if you allow some one to come today and becomes the head of the party”-she said.
