Government invested a whooping Shs12bn in buying post cars for 15 kings and cultural leaders across the country. One by one arrived at Kololo grounds and were handed keys to their two post cars by the Minister of Gender, Labor and Social Development Betty Amongi in an event which was graced by the Vice president Jesca Alupo.
It was earlier reported that the Kingdom of Buganda politely declined the gifts from president Museveni saying their King is well taken care of by his subjects (Baganda) so they didn’t need the cars. The Minister of Gender would later clarify that Buganda kingdom didn’t want the cars and instead took real cash.
Buganda Kingdom’s information minister Israel Kitooke hastily called journalists and disputed the Minister Amongi’s position saying the Kabaka rejected the salary from government and even the cars which were given to the cultural leaders.
“Katikirio Mayiga indeed met with Betty Amongi, but they never discussed cars. The meeting was about how Buganda can partner with the government in various development initiative. It was not about money or the cars”-he said
The posh cars are just an addition to the UGX60m monthly salary packages which parliament approved in the 2024/25 financial year from the initial Shs5m which the cultural leaders were getting as monthly salary.
A BIGGER PICTURE
The luxury SUVs are also a follow up on a very important conference that took place in January at Imperial royale Hotel where the traditional leaders converged for their annual conference under the auspices of the gender ministry between 16th and 17th January 2025 where there Kings endorsed president Museveni for presidency.
At the conference, all cultural institutions including Buganda Kingdom were represented and had big-name representatives who presented reports indicating what they are each doing to mobilize their subjects to participate in government programs aimed at achieving wealth creation and social economic transformation.
Buganda Kingdom was represented by Minister Noah Wamala, Bunyoro and Toro were represented by their Prime Ministers while the Kyabazinga of Busoga was represented by a group of Ministers who made a presentation too at the conference in January.
Kings or their representative competed for the microphone to be able to make presentations showing what they are doing to complement Gen Museveni’s government efforts to mobilize people into wealth creation activities.
