The National Unity Platform (NUP) which carries the majority opposition seats in parliament has this afternoon appointed it’s new leadership in parliament for the entire opposition for the term 2026-2031. After going through their internal processes, Nakawa West MP Joel Ssenyonyi has bounced back as the Leader of Opposition.
This now changes the culture that had been set by the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) to have the Leader of Opposition serve for only 2.5 years and hand it to another appointed person. NUP first had former Nyendo-Mukungwe legislator Mathias Mpuuga as their first leader of opposition before replacing him with Joel Ssenyonyi in December 2023.
All the previous Leaders of Opposition like Mathias Mpuuga, Winnie Kiiza, Betty Aol Ochan, Prof Ogenga Latigo, Nathan Nandala Mafabi and Wafula Ogutu all served the 2.5 years on such a culture which isn’t written in our books of laws in this country but NUP seems to be changing that for Ssenyonyi whom many voices say has performed well.
The outgoing Opposition Whip who is also the Manjiya County MP in Bududa District and the party’s Deputy President Eastern John Baptist Nambeshe has been appointed to the Parliamentary Commission while Jinja South East legislator Paul Mwiru who recently contested for speakership has been appointed the opposition Whip.
Kyadondo East MP Muwada Nkunyingi has been appointed Chairperson of the Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) and will be deputized by Jinja City Women MP Sarah Lwansasula.
NUP has also appointed Kasanda North MP Patrick Nsamba Oshabe as the Chairperson Public Accounts Committee and will be Deputized by Iganga Municipality MP Abed Nasser Mudiobole. The party has also appointed the full Shadow Cabinet with several members from other parties.
