Following a production warranty issued by the Chief Magistrate of Nakawa to have Besigye and his co-accused presented before court today morning, it was not business as usual on the bench as lawyers stormed out of court.
The appearance was impromptu and neither Besigye nor his lawyers were aware of what’s bringing them to court. They were only sure of the next hearing on Thursday 29th May next week where court will decide whether state amends the charge sheet or not.
Briefly before Besigye entered court, men in plain clothes believed to be security operatives stormed the chambers and started punching Besigye supporters and reasons for this is yet to be known to public.
While withdrawing from the Bar, Besigye’s lawyer Erias Lukwago told court that they have no instructions to represent their client on any matter which is not related to his mandatory bail having spend over 6 months behind the cold gates of Luzira prisons without trial.
“We clearly indicated to court that we have instruction to proceed with an application of Mandatory bail. We have no instructions to proceed with a matter which is not known to us. We can only get instructions after knowing what the matter is about….”said Lukwago
Despite the magistrate pleading with Lukwago to stay and know the matter which the state wants to present, Lukwago’s led legal bench withdrew from the proceedings.
