Suspected Congolese Army Abducts UPDF Officer On Lake Albert

The Congolese army have allegedly abducted a Uganda People Defense Forces, private Chelimo Edwin, 24 on lake Albert in Pakwach District

Police reports that the victim was on routine deployment with other colleagues when Congolese Army numbering eight, armed to the teeth, attacked them making away with PTE. Chelimo to their unknown operation base.

West Nile region police spokesman SP Collins Asea confirmed to our reporter through a media release observing that the unfortunate attack occurred at around early morning hours of Wednesday 14th May 2025 adding that case registered in Deyi police post.

“The Police would like to inform the public about a recent security incident that occurred in Deyi Sub-county, Pakwach District.

Incident Details:

“On 14th May 2025 at approximately 06:30 hours, a group of UPDF personnel from Panyimur Town Council, led by CPL Ssemugenyi Paul, was conducting routine patrols targeting illegal fishing activities in the areas of Kabolwa and Bugoigo. During their return journey to Deyi Landing Site, they encountered an armed ambush laid by approximately eight members of the Congo Army, equipped with two support weapons and AK-47 rifles.” Report reads in part

Asea revealed that PTE Chelimo was a resident of Deyi Parish, Deyi Sub-county, and was abducted along with his firearm, comprising 120 rounds of ammunition, a boat, and an engine.

He adds that suspects subsequently retreated into the Congo side with the victim. A report of the incident has been duly filed under SD reference 03/14/05/2025 at Panyimur Police Station.

Meanwhile security assured ongoing investigations are in progress to ensure the safe recovery of the abducted officer and to identify the perpetrators. Security has appealed to the public and relevant authorities to remain vigilant and assist with any information that may aid in resolving.

We couldn’t get a comment from Congolese security in Mahagi territory by press time. On many occasions UPDF have been working with their DR Congo counterparts to resolve boundary disputes over lake Albert.
