As of 4th July 2024, five members of parliament all belonging to the NRM party were behind bars at Luzira prisons facing corruption related cases. The five who include Cissy Namujju [Lwengo district], Paul Akamba [Busiki County], Yusuf Mutembuli [Bunyole East], Micheal Mawanda [Igara East] and Ignatius Mudimi Wamakuyu [Elgon County] have been detained now close to two months.

The group is facing different cases emanating from two different scandals; Namujju, Mutembuli and Akamba are accused of soliciting a 20% kickback of the enhanced 2024/25 budget of the Uganda Human Rights Commission. The three are said to have pressured the commission boss Mariam Wangadya for the 20% off in a meeting at Hotel Africana.

While Mudimi and Mawanda are together with several officials including the PS of the trade ministry Geraldine Sssali are accused of mishandling over Shs164billions meant to compensate SACCOs.

Today, the trio have been granted a Shs50million cash bail each by the Anti Corruption Court. Justice Lawrence Gidudu ruled that their alleged attempt to solicit funds from the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) budget did not involve physical violence or asset recovery.

They’ve been also ordered to deposit their passports in court and provide their sureties told to provide non-cash of Shs100million each. On 14th June, Busiki county legislator Paul Akamba who had been granted bail that day was re-arrested at the gates of the court by non-uniformed armed men. He was later slapped with fresh charges originating from the Cooperatives Cash scandal.
