Since this year began, just ahead of the 2026 general elections, Uganda Police has been allowing Bobi Wine to carry out country wide tours and halting them saying NUP never respects the conditions set for them to carry out their tours.
Bobi Wine resumed his country wide tours on 24th May 2024 but wasn’t allowed to enter Kamuli district, he would later be blocked the following day at Sezibwa Bridge in Kayunga as he was heading to Palisa district for another round of tours.
It was until the National Unity Platform engaged police where the Dos and Don’ts were discussed. This gave him greenlight for the Mukono rally and later the Masaka rally on 31st May. An accident at Maya reportedly caused by one of his vehicles in the convoy killed three prompting police to again halt the NUP tours and they didn’t go to Mityana as slated.
Now yesterday 11th July 2024, Police and NUP had an engagement where the country wide tours were again given a green light and this time round starting from Bundibugyo district in Western Uganda.
According to a police statement by the Deputy Police Spokesperson ACP Claire Nabaka, the two parties [Police and NUP] agreed on the following;
Carrying people on motor vehicle rooftops must immediately stop, Carrying of excess passengers in vehicles should stop, Over speeding is an offence and must stop, Moving in a convoy of many motor vehicles and motorcycles from Kampala to upcountry locations is not allowed, Harassing or provoking security personnel while on their lawful duties must stop, Regulating traffic is the mandate of the traffic police, and all road users should comply with traffic regulations. Persons not mandated to regulate traffic must stop, The NUP leadership was urged to take responsibility and prevail over the conduct of their members; otherwise they be held responsible.
Immediately after the meeting, Bobi Wine took to his social media pages and posted the new program for country wide tours.
