“Withdraw Your Corruption Supporting Statements”- Law Society To Speaker Anita Among And Kinyamatama

Over the weekend Speaker Anita Among alongside several other MPs attended a well attended event in Lwengo district where she even donated Shs50million to the Foundation of Muhammad Ssentayi the aspiring MP for Bukoto west amidst ululations and cheers.

At the event, a lot made news but the highlights were the comments by Speaker Anita Among and Rakai Woman MP Juliet Kinyamatama whose statements were openly in support of corruption. These statements have since birthed new words like #TextTheThief and Steal from Ugandans and Share with Ugandans (SUSU).

Anita Among openly told the people of Lwengo whose woman MP Cissy Namujju is currently behind the cold gates of Luzira prison over corruption related charges that they’re better having a leader who steals and shares with them.

“First of all i want to bring you greetings from Hon Cissy Namujju, she says she loves you. I went and met Cissy Namujju and she’s in good spirit and she’s going to be with you. That she’s going to be your women MP forever and the president has had your cries where you said that when your child misbehaves, you beat and tell her to go and do something good and you’re better off having a child even if she goes and eats something, so long as she brings back home”-said Anita Among

Anita Among also promised unwavering support for her now Five members of parliament all from NRM who are facing corruption related charges and are all on remand in Luzira, Yusuf Mutembuli, Cissy Namujju, Paul Akamba, Micheal Mawanda and Ignatius Mudimi Wamukuyu.

Namujju, Mutembuli and Akamba are facing charges related to pushing for a kickback of 20% from the enhanced budget of the Uganda Human Rights Commission boss Mariam Wangadya who recorded them and reported them to president Museveni while Mudimi and Mawanda are facing charges related to mismanagement of the Shs164billion for copoerative compensation.

When she got the microphone, Rakai MP Kinyamatama boldly said that “If Cissy dipped her hands somewhere as we here, she has been eating with the people of Lwengo” and these remarks have met stiff condemnation.

The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has now come out and urged the Speaker of Parliament and the Rakai MP Kinyamatama to retract their statements with indeed glorified corruption hence hampering with the available efforts to curb the vice.

In a statement released by the ULS boss Bernard Oundo, the two legislators have been asked to retract their statements and also urged stakeholders to conduct thorough and independent investigations into reports of high level corruption and to refrain from making comments that undermine the work of accountability institutions and courts.

The Uganda Law Society unequivically condemns these remarks. They undermine the tireless efforts of various stakeholders in the fiht against corruption and constitute a signidficant setback to the ongoing efforts to promote integrity and accountability in public administration”the statement reads in part

The ULS president also emphasized that the constitution provides a robust framework for ensuring accountability and the institutions established over the same to curb the vice which is said to be thriving much in the 11th parliament.

“The National Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy XXVI mandate that all public offices are held in trust for the people, and all persons in positions of leadership and responsibility must be answerable to the people”- the statement further reads
