NEW TWIST: State Drops Charges Of Unlawful Procession Of Fire Arms Against Besigye And Lutale
After the successful transfer of Besigye’s case file from the General Court Martial who trial of civilians was halted by the 31st January 2025 Supreme Court ruling, Besigye and his two co-accused have been fleshly charged at the Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court. Appearing before the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s court, the charge sheet looked revised and Besigye was charged with treason. Following a revelation by the Deputy Attorney General Jackson Kafuzi yesterday that Besigye’s file had been successfully transferred by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), a production warrant was issued yesterday evening. Dr. Kiiza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale have been produced before the Chief Magistrates Court in Nakawa and slapped with treason charges. Led by Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, Lawyer Medard Lubega Ssegona among others, Besigye’s legal team had applied for a harbias corpus in the high court. In so doing, they wanted to compel court to order for the release of Besigye and Lutale because they’re in prison on an inexistent remand order since the supreme court nullified the Court Martial proceedings.
