By Oweyegha-Afunaduula I have lived in Uganda continuously since 1990. I was involved in the intellectual debates of the early 1990s, when soldiers and civilians would peacefully debate and clash on national issues, some political, some non-military, without civilians ever suspecting that they would be kidnapped or roughened up, ultimately getting incarcerated in Luzira or other centres of abuse of freedom of UGANDANs. We praised the government of President Tibuhaburwa Museveni for being an open-mind loving and listening institution. Many young people benefitted from the debates on the issues and got deeply involved in advancing ideas, some of which benefitted…
Kampala: The monthly Stanbic Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), which provides a measure of prevailing private sector outlook, dropped to 53.1 during December compared to the 55.7 reading posted in November. Christopher Legilisho, Economist at Stanbic Bank said, “Stanbic Bank Uganda PMI data for December reveals sustained strong private sector growth, with businesses budding in optimism about present and future economic conditions. Private sector business conditions expanded for the ninth consecutive month due to strong sustained customer demand resulting in an expansion in output and new orders despite a dip in employment for a second month in a row.” He said,…
Following his dramatic arrest today afternoon inside the General Court Martial as he had gone to represent his clients Dr. Kiiza Besigye and Hajj Obeid Lutale, Counsel Eron Kiiza has been sentenced to 9 months in Kitalya prisons. Eron Kiiza who was being blocked from taking a stand a lawyer tried to push his way and this is when chaos ensued leading to his dramatic arrest inside court by men in uniform and was instead pushed into the dock where Besigye and Lutale were standing. Dr. Kiiza Besigye and his comrade Hajj Obeid Lutale were returned to court today but the Makindye-based court has turned into a theatre of drama. It started from denying many of Besigye’s supporters entry to the court. Another session of chaos ensued when the presiding judge ordered the arrest of lawyer Eron Kiiza who has been vocal in the military court and would take the bull by it’s horns without mincing his words. Eron Kiiza was grabbed by the collars by men in uniform inside court and they pushed him inside the dock where Besigye and Lutale were arraigned. The…
As court scheduled on 10th December last year to have Dr. Kiiza Besigye and his co-accused Hajj Obed Kamuregeya to return on 7th January 2025, the military court martial sitting at Makindye is back in action. It was good news to Besigye after the Uganda Law Council issued a temporary practicing license to their lead counsel and Kenyan politician Martha Wangari Karua who is also present at court today. Karua had re-applied for for the license on 23rd December 2024 following a rejection of the previous one on several grounds. Court returned today but the hardliner lawyer Eron Kiiza who…
Happy New Year to you our readers and clients, today the national unity platform has held it’s first press conference of 2025 and the party’s president addressed a number of issues some of which have since elicited mixed reactions. Bobi Wine called out the regime on corruption which is a disturbing cancer eating Museveni’s government. Ugandans lose a whooping Shs27bn daily and Shs10tr annually per year. According to the NUP principal, government prioritizes bribing opposition politicians to fight fellow opposition instead of social services. He also urged the youths to engage in leadership at all levels sounding the drums and…
The government of Uganda is thrown into excitement and happiness after new statistics revealed that Ugandan women are nolonger fertile like before and will have fewer children moving forward. According to the State Minister for Planning Amos Lugolobi, the fertility rate has drastically reduced to 5.2 per woman in the financial year 2022-2023 from 6.2 children per woman in the previous financial year. Amos Lugolobi further contends that the drop in the fertility rate of women also reduces the danger to Uganda’s economy to avoid costs on health, education and other social services which government spends on children and Ugandans.…
For many years, President Museveni has been very passionate about diminishing the levels of poverty and material deprivation among the people of Uganda. The 2024 census final report shows that Uganda, as of May 2024, had 10.7m households of which 3.5m (or 33%) were living under very depriving poverty while surviving under subsistence means-implying that they can’t afford their basic needs of life. Because they don’t have that much income to write home about, people in such subsistence agriculture households largely thrive on nature-enabled means of survival such as gathering, hunting and rudimentary agriculture. Determined to end their deprivation and…
In the news this afternoon, after submitting another application on 23rd December 2024 to be granted a temporary practicing certificate to represent her clients Dr.Kiiza Besigye and Hajj Obed Kamuregeya, Martha Karua Wangari has finally been granted the certificate. Her second application follows one that was denied on several grounds including Lukwago using his KCCA email on his private law practice activities. This rejection of the Law council caused backlash in legal circles and even the Kenya Law Council threatened revenge on Ugandan lawyers. Karua will now be able to lead a team of over 100 lawyers tomorrow in General…
