Peter Kawuki also known as Awakula ennume is emerging as a political force to reckon with ahead of the 2026 elections in Mpigi a district which he has been mobilizing politically for the last 10 years.

He has made waves in Mpigi through genuine local leadership, earning recognition among fishermen and community members for confronting issues like illegal fishing and selective enforcement.

His grassroots credibility and track record of active engagement set him apart as an advocate of justice, good governance and human rights. Now with voter sentiment trending toward change and opposition politics in a bid to end Museveni’s four-decade rule, Kawuki is well-positioned to shape or influence Mpigi’s political terrains in 2026.

The race for Mpigi district LC5 has attracted many contenders from different political parties but Kawuki faces off first with Hajjat Nakirijja Aisha the district women counselor for Kayabwe Town Council also the district Vice Chairman who has since went into hiding following the arrest of her boss early this month by the state house Anti-corruption unit.

The others include Bwete Joseph from Kiringente sub-county and Batemyetto Ibrahim who was initially running in Butambala as MP against the party’s Deputy president for Buganda Muwanga Kivumbi, but had a change of mind and rushed to Mpigi district after hearing that the youthful Ssejjemba is going for FDC’s Yusuf Nsimbambi to battle for Mawokota South.

The battle for the NUP ticket has now shifted focus to only two people since Nakirijja disappeared. Kawuki takes the lead followed by Bwete Joseph who have both traversed the district, gained grassroot support and are forces to reckon with. Kawuki in particular has made his action points clear as a formidable replacement for Ssejjemba.

Mpigi district LC5 position has also attracted three candidates from the NRM party. These include; Lubega Faluku, Muruya Manisool, Kyeyune David and Ssempijja Cyrus Baker who is the District Male Councilor PWD in the current term.

His candidature has gained support from all the sub-counties of Mpigi district. Sweeping through Kammengo, Kituntu, Kiringete,Muduuma, Nkozi, Mpigi town council and Buwama town council where he launched his bid for LC5 position in February 2024.

Kawuki has been at the forefront in fighting and advocating for justice, fairness and human rights through his African Fraternity for Justice and Development which focuses on human rights advocacy, particularly in areas like peace, justice, and development, with a special emphasis on serving vulnerable populations.

Through this organization, Kawuki Peter has offered free legal services to the financially disadvantaged and work to empower women, children, and youth. He has advocated for the fishermen who have faced the wrath of authorities on Lake Victoria.

Kawuki Peter alias Awakula Enume played a prominent leadership role at the Association of Fisheries and Lake Uses of Uganda (AFLU), advocating for fishermen in Greater Mpigi. He organized and chaired meetings with representatives from Nakaziba, Namugeye, Lwalaalo, Luwuuki, Ssenyondo, and Kiwanga landing sites to highlight injustices, including allegations of selective enforcement by authorities.

Even before joining the LC5 contest, Kawuki has previously taken on land grabbers and even urged government to prevail over harsh landlords. In 2017 when over 600 residents faced eviction at Bukiina village in Bunjako sub-county from a 371 -acre piece of land by a one Eria Mambule who said wanted to develop his land, the Buwama United Football boss was at the forefront.

“If landlords continue being harsh and the government fail to prevail over land grabbers, the country may plunge into anarchy. Let evictees either be compensated or settled to create peace in our communities”- said Kawuki at a gathering in Bukiina village in Mpigi district.

Mr. Kawuki Peter, who is also the President of Buwama United Football Club playing in FUFA’s fourth division in Mpigi district has mobilized the youths through sports and visiting ghettos. This has made him popular in Mawokota, especially in town centres. This has connected him with the grassroots through out the district.

In a district survey from several sub-counties done by this publication, Peter Kawuki stands out as a formidable force and a perfect replacement for Ssejemba who has now fully shifted focus to Mawokota South.

National Unity Platform (NUP) now ought to front a strong candidate who will face off with other candidates from parties like NRM, DP, FDC, PFF and Democratic Front among others to retain the Mpigi LC5 position.
