NTV Uganda, Spark TV, Daily Monitor, KFM and Dembe were taken off air after a military raid on Sunday 28th. The raid followed a series of threatening posts on X formerly twitter by the Chief of Defense Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba who revealed that he got the authorization of his father President Museveni to order the security crackdown.
The closure of Nation Media outlets has elicited mixed reactions and condemnation from within Uganda and across the globe over the growing crackdown on free speech and the rule of law which has seen the return of abductions and panda gali moments which were last seen during the reign of Idi Ami Dada in the 1970s.
The Uganda Communications Commission, the government agency tasked with regulation of Telecom and media platforms in the entire country revealed that it was not aware of the circumstances surrounding the closure of Nation Media Group outlets and promised to issue a statement once they’ve done consultations with other relevant bodies.
As Muhoozi continued on his tweeting rampage, Andrew Mwenda who is one of the top bosses in Muhoozi’s Patriotic League of Uganda revealed that he had engaged the CDF and agreed that PLU will re-open Nation Media but after meeting its owners at a place and date, he’ll inform the NMG bosses about.
The new minister for ICT and National Guidance Justine Lumumba Kasule has this afternoon issued a statement revealing that it’s president Museveni who orchestrated and ordered the security raid on Nation Media and not his son Muhoozi even without a court order in place. The minister further says Police and Army are doing inquiries into the operations of NMG and will inform the public once it’s done.
On 28th June 2026, operations at Nation Media were disrupted following a security-led inquiry instituted by H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. @MODVA_UPDF @PoliceUg and other agencies are conducting it. Government will inform the public once the inquiry is complete. pic.twitter.com/HgneVmiQjg
