In a rather shocking development, court has remanded former Makerere University Business School (MUBS) principal Prof Wasswa Balunywa to Luzira prisons until 5th September this month after his first appearance following court summons issued two weeks ago.

Balunywa who led MUBs from just a department of economics at Makerere University into a fully fledged institution now admitting 1000s each year with several campuses country wide and was it’s principal for over 30 years faces charges of abuse of office.

According to prosecution, Prof Balunywa abused his office during his tenure at MUBS between February and April 2023 when he irregularly recruited three individuals as administrative assistants without the required academic qualifications which costed ineligible government which tantamount to corruption.

The former MUBS boss also faces charges related to illegally appointing 103 academic staff, 17 administrative staff and 69 support staff which were not in his powers as Principal. Prosecution alleges that by law, other designated appointing committee should have done so than Balunywa himself.

After retiring from active service at MUBS, Balunywa was replaced by Professor Moses Muhwezi. He’s jointly accused with Jackeline Namaganda the acting Human Resource director at MUBS who was granted a Shs4m cash bail last week.

The two are of a group of 30 people accused of causing a total financial loss of Shs53billion to the government across various agencies including the Civil Aviation Authority and the Uganda police.
