The National Delegates’ Conference of the NRM happening at Kololo is ending today as the party forges way forward for the next five years and the general elections happening in January next year.

At the height of the conference yesterday evening were elections for members who will sit on the party’s apex body the Central Executive Committee. The stakes were high but it surely ended in premium tears for some and joy for some still.

The over 25000 delegates draw from across the country selected new members to the Central Executive Committee with all incumbents losing miserably and others withdrawing to avoid humiliation.

Mike Mukula and Godfrey Kiwanda Suubi all withdrew at the last minute after sensing defeat and rallied behind their opponents. Mukula decried voter bribery as he bowed out for Calvin Echodu while Kiwanda sighted brotherhood as he left the stage and endorsed Minister Haruna Kasolo Kyeyune.

For 2nd National Vice Chairperson Female, Speaker Anita Among got a comfortable win against her nemesis and former Speaker Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga with over 16000 votes and the Kamuli women MP managed only 900.

Minister Haruna Kasolo Kyeyune trounced money bags and famous land dealer Moses Kalangwa for Vice Chairperson Central. While Minister Chris Baryomunsi was trounced by Jonard Asiimwe for Vice Chairperson Western.

Government Chief Whip Hamson Denis Obua also trounced his two opponents veteran politicians Sam Engola and Dan Fred Kidega for Vice Chairperson Northern which was by the time of voting vacant after the death of Jacob Oulanyah in 2022.

Retired Lieutenant Moses Mushabe also trounced Minister Jim Muhwezi for chairperson of the veterans league while Lydia Wanyoto was defeated by Adrien Kobusingye for chairperson Women’s league.

The other tight race was for Vice chairperson Karamoja which had five candidates including a former RDC John Rex Achila. The delegates voted Loki John Baptism replacing late Simon Peter Aleper who perished in an accident in July 2024.

Kampala Central Division boss Salim Uhuru defeated his opponents to take the Vice Chairperson person Kampala replacing Singh Katongole.

The only old faces in NRM’s CEC now are just two who went through unopposed President Museveni as Chairperson and Alhajji Moses Kigongo as 1st National Vice Chairperson. These will now be joined by new faces; Salim Uhuru for Kampala, Loki John Baptist for Karamoja, Hamson Obua for Northern, Calvin Echodu for Eastern, Adrien Kobusingye as chairperson Women’s league, Lt (Rtd) Moses Mushabe for Vetrans’ league, Minister Haruna Kasolo for Buganda and Jonard Asiimwe for Western.

The CEC elections have left the party deeply fractured after money took centre stage as a determining factor. Those who gave out enough emerged victorious from Kololo while those who refused to break the bank to bribe voters came out of Kololo with gloomy faces.
