Countrywide, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) held it’s party primary elections. Party members were electing parliamentary flag bearers for the upcoming general election which will be held on Wednesday 14th January 2026 according to the road map of the Electoral Commission.
The nominations at Kyadondo party headquarters attracted almost 2000 for parliamentary, LC5, Municipality and City Mayors. Among these were journalists who resigned their jobs to try their luck in politics.
Among those who stormed Kyadondo to be nominated by Dr. Tanga Odoi were Simon Muyanga Lutaya who had just officially crossed to NRM. He had contested twice in Bulamogi twice on the FDC ticket. He tried with Muhoozi’s PLU until he joined NRM after being welcomed by Speaker Anita Among. He lost miserably again to Bwire Sanon.
The other is veteran journalist Sirina Kyakuweire who is the Deputy Speaker of Jinja city and has been working with Baba radio. She also owns Busoga Media institute. She contested in the NRM parliamentary elections to be the City’s Women MP. She lost to Annet Musika who got 12869 vote. Sirina Kyakuweire managed to get 1847 votes.
NBS radio station Manager Mirembe Esther also contested for the Jinja City Women MP on the NRM ticket was not exceptional. She also lost to Annet Musika and managed to get 2373 votes. Even her Radio boss Nathan Igeme Nabeta was also left in tears after losing to Councilor Richard Mbaziira.
Journalist Victoria Bagaya also resigned at NBS Tv to contest in Fort portal city, she lost to Linda Irene. Bagaya managed to get 3662 votes against Linda’s 9160 votes. The voters in Burahya county in Kabarole district equally rejected Charles Mwanguhya who until his resignation was hosting the NBS Frontline.
Mwanguhya who was giving a second chance in politics in Burahya which he lost in 2021 after quitting his job at Nation Media once again lost to Charles Mugenyi who got 27176 votes in yesterday’s NRM primary elections.
Several prominent journalists have made it to parliament. Among these is Dan Kimosho who also got the NRM ticket in Kazo yesterday. Ibrahim Ssemuju Nganda, Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi and former NBS News Manager Joyce Bagala are some of the journalists who have enjoyed good time in parliament on the floor of parliament in the 11th parliament.
