As the country gears up to the 2026 general elections with NRM done with holding it’s primary elections which were marred with chaos, fights and disappointments, the Electoral Commission has now made changes to the nomination of candidates.
At a media briefing held at the commission headquarters in Kampala, Justice Byabakama announced nomination dates for different positions from local councils, Members of parliament to presidential candidates. In a statement issued by the commission’s boss Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama also revealed campaigning dates.
In the new changes, presidential candidates which had been scheduled for 2nd and 3rd October have been brought down to an earlier date of 23rd and 24th September 2025. After nominations, the parliamentary and presidential campaigns will start 4th October, end 12th January 2026 and elections will be held on Wednesday 14th January 2026.

In the other changes, Nomination of Candidates for Local Governments, including SIGs will take place between 3rd – 12th September 2025. Nomination of Candidates for Parliamentary Elections will take place from 16th – 17th September 2025 and nomination of candidates for SIGs Representatives to Local Governments from 8th – 12th December 2025.
