Pope Francis died on 21st April 2025 a day after waving at 1000s of Catholics who had gathered at the St. Peters square to celebrate Easter. The Pontiff who was very sick appeared the central Window of the Basilica raising hopes of full recovered among the faithful following months of ill health.
He was interred few days later at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, as per his own wishes. The funeral and procession were attended by hundred of thousands of people and many world leaders. The service was held at St Peter’s Square in Vatican City and the Pope’s coffin was subsequently transported to Santa Maria Maggiore for burial.

Following his burial, the church commenced arrangements of getting a new pope. Subsequently, the college of cardinals especially the 133 who are eligible to vote converged inside the revered Sistine Chapel yesterday to elect a new pope.
The black smoke which symbolizes that no has been voted after an election bellowed the chimney at the Chapel as thousands kept waiting for the White Smoke which is a sign that new pope has been elected.
Few minutes after 7pm, the long awaited smoke came of the chimney of the Sistine Chapel bringing the long wait to ease signifying that the cardinals had elected a new pope.
Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti has now unveiled the new Pope who also serves as the Bishop of Rome from the Loggia of Blessings of St. Peter’s Basilica. The name of the New Pope is American Cardinal Robert Prevost who was made cardinal by pope Francis in 2023.
Prevost becomes the first United State of America cardinal to be elected pope but the second from the America’s after Pope Francis who was from Argentina. He’s 69 years old and will be called Pope Leo XIV.
