Owing to the death of the Kisoro district Women Representative Sarah Mateke on 7th September 2024,a highly contested by-election took place yesterday with six candidates where all Uganda’s major political parties fielded candidates.

The race had six women who included; Independent candidate Grace Akifeza Ngabirano, PPP’s Cyimpaye Aisha, UPC’s Ingabire Mable, NUP’s Zubedi Sultana Salim, NRM’s Rose Kabagyeni and FDC’s Juliet Musanase with top political shots storming the South Western district to drum up support for their candidates including President Museveni and NUP’s Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine.

Stakes have been high in this election with Kisoro NRM district chairperson Dr Philemon Mateke rallying behind an independent candidate Grace Akifeza Ngabirano defying the party’s position of supporting the flag bearer Rose Kabagyeni who once represented Kisoro district in parliament before his late daughter Sarah Mateke came in the political limelight.

Few minutes past mid-night, celebrations took a huge turn when it became clear that all the major political parties in the race; UPC, NUP, FDC and NRM had lost the election to an independent candidate Grace Akifeza Ngabirano despite earlier celebrations that NRM had won amidst vote rigging and ballot stuffing claims.

At half past 1am, Nayebare Daniel the Kisoro district returning officer declared declared the results as follows; Cyimpaye Aisha got 157 votes, Ingabire Mable of UPC got 362 votes, Musanase Juliet of FDC got 193 votes, Zubedi Sultana Salim of NUP got 903 votes, Rose Kabagyeni of NRM got 44982 votes and Independent candidate Akifeza Grace got 50459 votes.

Several NRM aspirants pulled out the race when they met president Museveni in State House but Akifeza defied the president’s directives and decided to face the bull by it’s horns with backing of Dr. Philemon Mateke. Her defiance paid off greatly.
