In recent months, political tensions in Kenya have escalated and one figure who has found himself at the centre of controversy is Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua whom parliament impeached 10 days ago. His impeachment didn’t come a surprise as the divisions between him and his boss President William Ruto had become irreconcilable.
On Thursday last week, Kenya’s upper house; the Senate upheld Gachagua’s impeachment while he was at Karen Hospital where he had been rushed with terrible chest pains and was unable to take the stand for cross examination during the proceedings.
As he was languishing in hospital, Ruto nominated Interior Cabinet Secretary Professor Kithure Kindiki as new Deputy President, he was overwhelmingly voted in parliament and immediately gazeted and was set to be sworn in yesterday Saturday 19th.
Had it not been two court orders one stopping Ruto and parliament from nominating and approving a new Deputy President and another court order stopping Kindiki’s swearing in. Gachagua would be in history to start his 10 year ban from active politics after impeachment.
His hope now narrowly stands in the Justice Martha Koome’s courts which will decide either to uphold his impeachment or rendered null and void as Gachagua insists the process leading to his impeachment was marred with irregularities and no sufficient evidence was put forward.
Gachagua was discharged from the Karen Hospital upon his request and as he was leaving hospital he talked to the media where he made very shocking revelations. Gachagua claims that he has been a target of assassination attempt specifically alleging that there were two attempts to poison him. This has ignited discussions across the nation, drawing both support and skepticism from the political terrains.
At Karen Hospital, Gachagua shared details of what he described as two separate poisoning attempts. He says they tried to poison his food and even monitored his communications during a tour of Kisumu two months ago.
“For the first time, let me say that on August 30, in Kisumu, undercover security entered my room in Kisumu and bugged it and one of them tried to poison my food, but we detected it and we were able to escape the scheme,”-Gachagua said.
“I was supposed to be killed by poising and in September in Nyeri another team came and tried to poison some food meant for me and the kikuyu Council of Elders”
The embattled Ousted Deputy President further said he had to send away some intelligence officers in his office because he didn’t feel safe. He further called out Ruto for withdrawing his security while he was hospitalized at the Karen hospital.
He noted that he had trusted the President well enough not to need a memorandum of understanding (MOU) like his peers Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula but it’s a decision he will regret because it has costed him his deputy presidency.
“I bear no grudge against anybody but I had not seen that in President William Ruto, the man I am seeing is not the one i thought i knew:-Gachagua stated. Further saying “It’s unfortunate that while i was in hospital, my brother and friend William Ruto ordered the withdrawl of my security detail. I nolonger have any officers assigned to protect me. I never imagined Ruto could that vicious, especially after i helped him become president. As of today, the Deputy President of Kenya has no security. If anything happens to me or my family, Ruto should he held accountable”
