By Ibrahim Senyonga It is now evident that Uganda’s path to socio-economic transformation will not be driven by connectivity alone but by how that connectivity is translated into real value through platforms, digital tools, and strong public-private collaboration. At the Second Annual ICT National Summit held at the National ICT Innovation Hub in Nakawa, Kampala, under the theme “Harnessing Digital Innovation for Sustainable Economic Growth” (July 17–18, 2025), one message stood out clearly: the digital future is no longer a distant prospect; it is here. And how we respond collectively will determine whether we merely adopt technology or fully harness…

By Julius Mboizi In a noteworthy decision with potential regional implications, Uganda’s Personal Data Protection Office (PDPO) on July 18, 2025, ruled against Google for violations of the Country’s Data Protection and Privacy Act Cap. 97. While this ruling emerges from a single African jurisdiction, it may prove pivotal in shaping how global digital platforms engage with emerging markets and how those markets assert their digital sovereignty in return. In November 2024, four Ugandan citizens (all descendants of Max Schrems) filed a formal complaint with the PDPO against Google LLC, alleging non-compliance with Uganda’s Data Protection and Privacy Act. The…

In Uganda today, a troubling trend is unfolding one that strikes at the very heart of justice, governance and professional integrity. Two senior executives of the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), including the Deputy Executive Director (DED) and the Executive Director (ED) find themselves at the center of criminal prosecution over the tragic collapse of the Kiteezi Landfill (KLF). Yet a closer examination of the facts reveals a case that is not rooted in law, evidence or causation, but one that is based on optics, institutional deflection and political expedience. Many are beginning to perceive the state case and approach…

Insurance is an essential tool for protecting families from financial hardship during difficult times. In Uganda, however, very few people are covered. A recent report by the Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda shows that insurance penetration remains low, at just 0.867 percent. This is despite the sector recording impressive growth in 2024, with gross written premiums rising by 12.04 percent to about UGX 1.79 trillion. Life insurance, in particular, has played a big role in that growth, averaging an annual increase of over 27 percent over the last decade.
