JUST IN: Veteran Journalist Shaka Ssali Dies At 71 Years

In the news this evening, Veteran Journalist Shaka Ssali has died. He’s revered across the continent He is revered in Africa and beyond for his masterful way of bringing the African agenda to the world stage through his high-profile interviews on Voice of America (VOA).

Fleeing Uganda in 1976, “the Kabale kid” born Mike Mushakamba Ssali to Joyce and John Wilson Mushakamba started out as a co-host of Africa World Tonight, before VOA entrusted him with Straight Talk Africa in August 2000, a platform that made him a legend in journalism.

He bowed out of Voice of America after 29 years of which 20 were of him at the helm of Straight Talk Africa three years ago and he’s been living a quiet life and only came out last year in April 2024 when he was first announced dead but came out to refute the reports.

His death comes at the time when Voice of America is winding up operations after President Donald Trump signed an executive order eliminating VOA which has been getting funding from the American government.

VOA in a statement confirmed his death describing it as “the end of an era for African Journalism. According to VOA, Ssali leaves behind an indelible legacy of truth and accountability”. He died at the age of 71 years

Condolences continue flowing in for the fallen journalist who dedicated his entire career bringing Africa at the world stage and his show focused so much on politics, governance and business.
