The Electoral Commission is today 26th and tomorrow 27th nominating candidates for the Kawempe North elections set for 13th March 2025. The race has attracted more than 10 candidates with NRM, FDC, DP, NUP all fronting candidates.

Earlier, National Unity Platform candidate Counsel Erias Nalukoola Luyimbaazi faced set backs when his official agent was reportedly abducted with all his nomination papers including payment receipts for his nomination fees.

As Nalukoola was preparing to process new papers for his nomination, his abducted agent was returned and these proceeded to the nomination centre to be nominated franked by NUP’s Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya.

However, hell broke loose when Nalukoola was brutally arrested by JAT operatives as he moved with his supporters. These tore his shirts before bundling him in a waiting drone vehicle and driven to Kawempe police station. Pleas by his supporters to the the security operatives to free him fell on deaf ears as the determined gun wielding men pushed him inside the drone before driving off.

Resistance by his supporters was met with live bullets in the air as security was dispersing Nalukoola’s supporters. The other candidates in the race include Luwemba Luswa Muhammad who was Ssegirinya’s aide and is running as an independent candidate, Musician Kalifah Aganaga who is running on FDC ticket, Nambi Faridah of NRM, Henry Kiyimba of DP, Hanifah Karadi independent, Moses Nsereko who is also running independent after being denied the NUP ticket.

This development comes at a time of renewed abductions of opposition leaders and supporters especially from NUP just as it was the case towards and after the 2021 general elections. Security also last week raided NUP offices and took several things including computers, documents and money.

Political analysts say police and the army have already painted the picture of the 2026 general elections and might not be different from those of 2021 which were simply defined as violent.
