Parliament has this morning paid tribute to the fallen Member of parliament of Kawempe North Hon Muhammad Ssegirinya who died yesterday at Lubaga Hospital in Kampala after a long battle with sickness.

In a parliamentary session attended mostly by opposition legislators, Ssegirinya was described as a leader who was for the down trodden and did a lot for his constituents for the little time he was in parliament even more than those who’ve been in the house for years.

Many legislators attributed Ssegirinya’s health woes to the state which brought charges against him, arrested him and would later spend almost two years in Kigo prisons with his counterpart Allan Ssewanyana as state continued remanding them without trying them.

Many legislators have urged government to consider making thorough investigations before arresting people than arresting people and remand them for years when evidence to pin them is no where.

Ssegirinya and his counterpart Ssewanyana had all their bail applications rejected by Justice Lawrence Tweyanze even when they wanted to seek medical attention from their doctors but court and prisons instead said they had capacity to treat him.

As parliamentarians paid tribute, Butambala District MP Aisha Kabanda suggested an ammendment to the motion of atleast each MP to contribute Shs300,000 to the family of Ssegirinya such that  they’re able to start up an investment for them to sustain and even push the kids to school.

Speaker Anita Among promised to educate one of Ssegirinya’s daughter called Nnagirinya in primary and also take her to her Bukedea Comprehensive College. In the same way, Minister of ICT and National Guidance Dr.Chris Baryomunsi promised to educate another Ssegirinya child since their mother comes from his Kinkizi constituency in Kanungu district.

All legislators from both sides including the independent accepted the amendment and allowed parliament to deduct Shs300,000 from their salaries to go towards supporting the family of Hon Ssegirinya.
