After the successful end of the brutal Kawempe North by-election on 13th March 2025, the winner Erias Luyimbaazi Nalukoola of the National Unity Platform had been placed on the waiting list and has never been sworn in for the last 10 days. The silence of the electoral commission had become loud to the extent that even legislators became concerned that the winner in Kawempe hadn’t been sworn in to which the speaker said she’s waiting for official confirmation from the Electoral Commission by publishing the winner in the Uganda gazette. Nearly forty years ago, Uganda has failed to depart or move away from its turbulent past of militarism to witness a peaceful handover. Our politics and political history is littered with military interference whenever we have disagreements or contradictions within parties, especially within the ruling party. Ugandans should get worried when cracks begin to appear in the ruling party, like the way violent internal elections are held. Soldiers usually can take advantage of these contradictions to regard themselves as a better alternative to civilian rule, whether the politics is based on a multiparty or a one-party political setting. Normally a…

Owing to the death of Muhammad Ssegirinya who was MP for Kawempe North, Electoral Commission released an electoral road map to find a new MP for the area and it was yesterday that voters went to the polls to cast their vote. Birthed and baptized with bloodshed and brutality by security organs especially the hooded JAT commandos, the process has been widely condemned by several actors including church leaders who urged government even to abolish elections since it couldn’t stand the competition. The NRM candidate Faridah Nambi was on another side campaigning peacefully and even making processions in roads while…

As one might brag about having a strong Army and being reliant on it as tool of oppression and coercion, one can also on the other side get worried of the plague of dissension and desertions if they start creeping in. When one makes a critical analysis of how desertions can negatively impact on the performance and preparedness of our forces, then there should be a serious concern about the existence of our forces in times of danger and difficult situations. Such an Army or Police Force can easily be influenced by wrong elements who can make wrong decisions because…
By Oweyegha-Afunaduula In Uganda, environmental conservation is done as a technical rather than an ecological and cultural undertaking. The unity of human communities and nature is continuously abused. The reason for this conservation attitude and practice is traceable to our colonially designed education system, which has for decades taught generations of Ugandan learners that we are apart from, not part of the environment. In other words, we have been tuned to take the environment as something only physical, which is there just for us to exploit to satisfy our needs and greed. Time has proved that this attitude towards the…
