In the news this evening, the anti corruption court has convicted former State Minister for Karamoja Affairs also outgoing member of parliament for Buduuda District Agnes Nanduutu to four years in Prison for diverting over 2000 ironsheets meant for the vulnerable families in Karamoja in 2022.

Nanduutu who has only 14 days to appeal the sentence in the court of appeal which rarely sits has also been handed a 10- year ban from public office.

The former NTV journalist is a first time Member of parliament who was appointed State Minister for Karamoja. Despite her pleas to court for lenience that she’s a single mother, an orphan and the sole bread winner in her family, she’ll go to prison and server four years.

The Mabaati Scandal hit headlines in June 2023 after over 10,000 ironsheets meant for the vulnerable people in Karamoja were diverted by several ministers and Speaker Anita Among whose share of ironsheets was delivered at her school Bukedea Comprehensive College.

The other ministers involved include Finance Minister Matia Kasaija, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, former Karamoja Minister Dr. Mary Goreti Kitutu, Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, Judith Nabakooba, Amos Lugolobi, Fred Bwino Kyakulaga, and Denis Obua.

Lugolobi, Nanduutu and Kitutu faced arrests and slept in Luzira prisons for some days and were granted bail days later. The others were told to return the mabaati to the Office of the Prime Minister Warehouse in Namanve or pay cash equivalent to the Mabaati they had stolen.

As misfortune can have, Minister Lugoloobi’s mabaati case was dropped by Director of Public Prosecutions last year while the case involving Dr. Mary Goreti Kitutu also went quiet and the other mabaati recipients were all forgiven by Museveni and instead court zeroed on Nanduutu to be the sacrificial land.
