Held in prison for long, denied bail, denied access to his doctors for proper medication and now he’s been denied prayers organized at Lubaga Cathedral. This time not on orders of a judge like Emmanuel Baguma but on orders of president Museveni through a call to the Archbishop Paul Ssemwogerere who was to lead the Mass today.
As the clock ticked towards 2pm, leaders and supporters of Dr. Kiiza Besigye thronged Lubaga Cathedral to be part of the mass that had been organized to pray for the four time presidential candidate and other political prisoners.
With every one confused on what next after the sound was disabled and no priest in sight, it became clear the highly Anticipated Mass won’t happen today, maybe some other day when new orders are given to have it take place. The event had been attended largely by opposition politicians from across board.

Speaking about the incident inside the Cathedral, Besigye’s wife Winnie Byanyima revealed to the congregants that the Arch Bishop invited her yesterday to reveal the bad news to her that the expected Mass he’s supposed to preside over won’t be taking place, maybe some other day.
“I was called here yesterday by the Arch Bishop His Grace Paul Ssemwogerere and he told me that he had received a call from President Museveni asking him to cancel the mass. He [Arch Bishop] pleased with him [Museveni] not to cancel the mass explaining to him that this is catholic tradition and that i came to ask for prayers for him in the period of Lent and that that’s the tradition he’s going to pray….”-says Winnie Byanyima.
The UNAIDs Executive Director further reveals that the Arch Bishop tried pleading with president Museveni to allow the prayers to happen but the son of Kaguta insisted and told the Church to postpone the mass such that investigations are done to ascertain whether the event isn’t political.
“He [Museveni] finally relented and said okay postpone the mass i need to do an investigation because i think it’s political. Postpone it for a few days. I will call you back and i will tell you what i find out. So the Arch Bishop told me that he’ll wait to hear back from president Museveni after his investigations and then he’ll schedule another for us to come and pray for Dr. Besigye and other prisoners…”-Winnie Byanyima further reveals.
Dr. Kiiza Besigye was grabbed from Nairobi and returned to Kampala and was first charged from the then very tough General Court Martial on charges related to threatening national peace and plotting to overthrow Museveni. He was also charged for possessing a pistol together with his aid Obeid Lutale but that charge has since been dropped.
Owing to the January 2025 Supreme court ruling which trimmed Court Martial powers to try civilians, Besigye’s case was transferred to the Civilian courts first in the lower court in Nakawa and later to the high court. Hearing of the case is yet to commence and all his bail applications have been declined without clear reasons by two justices of the High Court Rose Comfort Kania and later Justice Emmanuel Baguma who has insisted whether Besigye likes it or not, he’ll preside over his case.
