President Museveni has officially communicated the firing of Jenifer Bamuturaki as CEO of the Uganda Airlines whom he in 2022 protected with all his energy from scrutiny as Joel Ssenyonyi’s COSASE questioned her abilities and competence to run the national carrier.

Bamuturaki stepped down three weeks ago from this position and the search for her replacement immediately commenced. Retired Ethiopian airlines CEO Wake Girma was poised to take on the mantle as the airline looks for a substantive CEO.

Now weeks after Bamuturaki stepped down, president Museveni has formally written to the Minister of Works and Transport Gen Edward Katumba Wamala directing him to immediately appoint Ethiopian Girma Wake as the acting CEO of Uganda Airlines and also enable Bamuturaki to handover peacefully.

The president in his letter has also directed the Uganda Airlines Board to organize whatever emoluments are due to Bamuturaki and pay her despite reports of her taking home a salary of as much as Shs80m per month from a collapsing loss making business.

Museveni appointed Bamuturaki the Uganda Airlines CEO even when she didn’t possess the required academic qualifications. At the time of her appointment, Bamuturaki only had a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work and Social Administration (BSWASA) from Makerere University and she didn’t go through a formal recruitment process, she was just handpicked and gifted the position.

She replaced Zambian Conwell Muleya who was suspended from work in 2021 and formally terminated in 2022 following allegations of corruption and mismanagement charges for which he was later cleared. He would later run to court over unfair termination and court in 2025 ruled that government pays him over Shs455million for firing him illegally.
