When Bobi Wine’s People Power converted from a pressure group into a political party dubbed National Unity Platform, several politicians who had doubts about his political standing started joining him from other parties.
Among those who joined him were Mathias Mpuuga, Muhammed Muwanga Kivumbi, Medard Lubega Ssegona, Mike Mabiike, Moses Kasibante and Lubega Mukaaku from the then DP Block.
The Kyagulanyi effect by then even forced seasoned politicians like Mike Mabiike to leave their own political parties to join him in 2020. Mabiike left his Social Development Party (SDP) while three time presidential candidate Dr. Abed Bwanika also left his own political party People’s Development Party (PDP) to join.
Years later it seemed like majority who joined only wanted to tap into Bobi Wine’s popularity to join the dining table. Abed Bwanika abandoned his presidential ambitions to contest in the Kimanya-Kabonela constituency in the then newly created Masaka City on the NUP ticket.
National Unity Platform swept through constituencies and the party clinched several parliamentary seats hence becoming the leading opposition party in parliament. Nyendo-Mukungwe legislator Mathias Mpuuga was appointed the leader of Opposition.
He disagreed with his party and party president when he received a service award of 500m from the parliamentary commission. The rift continued and Mpuuga who was the party Deputy president incharge of Buganda was replaced with Muhammed Muwanga Kivumbi.
His colleagues Lubega Mukaaku, Mike Mabiike, Kasibante and Abed Bwanika would later denounce NUP and it was clear the two groups failed to reconcile for a common good. In the months preceding to the nomination of candidates for the 2026 General Elections, Mpuuga unveiled his own political party with his colleagues dubbed the Democratic Front.
Bobi Wine was on Saturday 29th in Masaka city for his presidential campaigns and also to campaign for the party flag bearers. He technically never mentioned the name Mpuuga or Bwanika in all his speeches which political observers now say was a calculated move which has now started yielding fruits.
Few days after coming back from Masaka City, Kimanya-Kabonela legislator Dr. Abed Bwanika who has long been throwing all sorts of jibes and jittery to Bobi Wine seems to have succumbed to pressure. He’s been seen in a video endorsing Kyagulanyi and asking his supporters to vote for him if the so wish.
“When Kyagulanyi was here, i never heard him abusing me and i can’t stand here to abuse him. Those who wish to vote him please do so. He never attacked us, so we can’t attack him. Secondly, am not contesting for presidency so am not contesting with Kyagulanyi”- Dr Bwanika said
Bwanika’s endorsement of Bobi Wine comes few weeks after their former ally Muhammed Muwanga Kivumbi questioned them to point at a presidential candidate their party Democratic Front is supporting since they didn’t nominate their own presidential candidate.
The former presidential Candidate Abed Bwanika as he campaigns for his second term as a member of parliament now taps into support from his own personal political Party the People’s Development Party (PDP) which he abandoned, the Democratic Front (DF) where he is currently and those in the National Unity Platform which he left recently.
