On 21st August 2025, the Electoral Commission confirmed that 207 Ugandans had picked nomination papers to vie for the country’s top job in the general elections which will take place in January 2026.

The incumbent President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni was also among those who picked nomination papers saying he had some unfinished business and needs more five years. This would bring his grip to power to 45 years.

Out of the 207 who showed interest to end Museveni’s 4-decade rule, only 38 returned the nomination papers with atleast 100 signatures collected across the entire country from atleast 98 districts as required by law.

Out of 38 who returned, only 8 were nominated after they met all the requirements. Those nominated and already on the campaign trail include Mubarak Munyagwa of the Common Man’s Party, Robert Kasibante of the National Peasants Party, Nathan Nandala Mafabi of the Forum for Democratic Change, Elton Joseph Mabirizi of the Conservative Party, and Frank Bulira of the Revolutionary People’s Party.

The others include Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine of the National Unity Platfrom (NUP), Mugisha Muntu of Alliance for National Transformation who both contested against Museveni in 2021 who is also vying for the 7th electoral term.

It’s the first time the ballot will have only presidential candidates vying on party flags with no female presidential candidate and no independent presidential candidates since 2006 when the county held it’s first multi-party general election after the return of political party dispensation in a referendum of July 2005.

Among the 30 who missed nomination is Magezi David William famously known for his hard hitting English words and accent when trying to explain the political and general situation of Uganda which he says has gone to the dogs during the 40 years of Museveni.

Magezi has now swallowed his pride not to wait for the next presidential election to chase his dreams. He is making use of the only existing nomination window for Members of Parliament to try his luck the 12th parliament and is eyeing Kyadondo East which birthed Bobi Wine’s political career now represented by Muwada Nkunyingi.

He’s not the first to drop presidential hopes for Member of parliament. Three time presidential candidate Dr. Abed Bwanika got fed up of losing and dumped his own political party People’s Development Party in 2020, rushed to National Unity Platform to get a party flag, got elected to parliament for Kimanya- Kabonera in the then newly created Masaka City.

To prove he’s nolonger vying for presidency, Abed Bwanika has again dumped NUP. He has not gone to revive his own political party but joined a newly formed political movement Democratic Front to secure a party flag back to parliament. The new party DF is headed by Mathias Mpuuga and his four best political friends Lubega Mukaaku, Mike Mabiike, and Moses Kasibante.

Former Presidential Candidate in the 2021 elections and Bush war hero Henry Tumukunde has also dropped presidential ambitions to vie for Rukungiri Municipality seat in the 12th parliament.
