President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa also Ssabalwanyi Ssemalungu has today been nominated by the Electoral Commission to run for presidency in the upcoming general elections as seeks for a 7th term.
His campaign theme dubbed Protecting The Gains consolidates all that he has managed to do in the last forty years since he became president in 1986 after toppling the government then through a guerilla war.
Prior to his nomination today, President Museveni had earlier handed over power to Democratic Party president General Norbert Mao who also serves in his government as a minister of justice and constitutional affairs.
Museveni had been the chairperson of the Inter-Party Organization for Dialogue (IPOD) a forum which brings together all political parties which have representation in parliament. The president had been IPOD’s chairperson for the last 5 years but handed over peacefully to Norbert Mao.
Speaking at the IPOD Summit in Kampala, President Museveni likened politics to medicine, saying leaders must “diagnose society’s problems correctly” to offer the right solutions.
“A political leader should be like a doctor. If he makes a wrong diagnosis and a wrong prescription, the patients will not get cured. They may even die,” Museveni said. “When you have the right understanding and act right, the country will be peaceful. But if you are wrong and violent, that is how you get chaos.”-said Museveni.
Besides Museveni of NRM and Norbert Mao of DP, the IPOD summit was attended by leaders from other political parties; Eng Patrick Oboi Amuria and Nathan Nandala Mafabi of FDC, Jimmy Akena of UPC and Asuman Basalirwa of JEEMA.
The summit, held under the theme Together for a Peaceful and Sustainable Uganda, brought together leaders of all parliamentary political parties. IPOD Executive Secretary Dr. Lawrence Sserwambala said the gathering demonstrated “our shared belief that dialogue remains the most reliable path to peace, inclusivity, and sustainable democratic governance.”
“I want to thank the IPOD for having trusted us NRM for the last five years with the leadership, I now peacefully handover to Mao…..”Museveni Said.
Norbert Mao who had earlier picked nomination forms to run for presidency just like he did in 2021 has since dropped out of the race and instead announced support for his boss in Cabinet President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and he said he’ll soon convene the DP Executive leaders meeting to formally have the entire party line up behind Museveni.
“As a party we, we have decided that we will discuss that but if you ask me as Norbert Mao, i would back president Museveni but we need the party i lead to pronounce itself formally and the time will come for that but am not afraid to declare where i stand”- Mao revealed while revealing his utmost support for his boss Museveni.
