Former Speaker and Minister Rebecca Kadaga is at the tail end of facing a huge rejection from the party she has served for the last 36 years. She has never belonged to any other political party.

She’s served the party and government as minister, deputy speaker for 10 years and speaker of parliament for 10 years and was only booted by the very strong hand of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni who supported the candidacy of former speaker Jacob Oulanyah in May 2021.

Despite dropping her from the very influential speakership position, President Museveni would later appoint Kadaga to his fishermen cabinet as 1st Deputy Prime Minister and Minister in charge of East African affairs a docket previously held by late veteran politician Ali Kirunda Kivejinja.

Now the last attempt to further clip Kadaga’s political influence is happening this week as NRM party delegates convene to elect leaders to the apex body; the Central Executive Committee. At the heart of the Contest is the position of 2nd National Vice Chairperson female where Kadaga is facing off with Speaker Anita Among.

Kadaga in a party’s National Executive Council held at state house, she openly told President Museveni for humiliating her. A visibly angry Kadaga wondered which kind of party they’re building which doesn’t value commitment, patience, integrity and loyalty when new comers like Anita Among are given bragging rights at the expense of long serving cadres like her.

The Kamuli women MP further accused the party and it’s chairman Museveni of flaunting party guidelines which require any person vying for such a top position to show case what they’ve done for the party in the last 10 years and in this case, the guidelines seem to have been softened for Among who has only served NRM for three years.

Her speech has since stirred and elicited mixed reactions from Ugandans in the corridors of power with some urging her to ditch NRM and join the opposition to dislodge Museveni whose grip to power is now coming to 40 years and has already launched another bid to extend his rule to 45 years.

While launching the party’s regional office for Eastern Uganda in Iganga municipality, National Unity Platform principal Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu extended a welcoming hand to Kadaga, saying she’s a very big asset to this country and as NUP they welcome her to join them since NRM is hellbent in rejecting her.

“There’s a person i love so much, most of you in Busoga call her Mama but i call her auntie because we belong to the same clan. I belong to the Mbogo clan and Kadaga also belongs to the same. I am standing here in Iganga to send her a message saying that we love her so much. Auntie for us we love but those guys in NRM now don’t love you, why force yourself on them, you’re such a quality leader, come join us and we advocate for the change in Uganda”- Bobi Wine said.
