Following a story by the BBC world service which also quoted CBC news indicating that Ugandan government had accepted to host immigrants which the United States is deporting, the Ministry of internal affairs has issued a statement.
As earlier reported by the BBC, Uganda has indeed accepted to take in deportees who have been unceremoniously chased away from the US by the Trump administration under several conditions with some still under discussion.
According to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Bagiire Vicent Waiswa, the Agreement is in respect of Third Country Nationals who may not be granted asylum in the United States but are reluctant to or may have concerns about returning to their countries of origin.
The PS further highlights as part of the agreement, Uganda will only take in individuals without criminal records and with the unaccompanied minors will also not be allow. The Museveni will also only prefer those from African countries.
“This is a temporary arrangement with conditions including that individuals with criminal records and unaccompanied minors will not be accepted. Uganda also prefers that individuals from African countries shall be the ones transferred to Uganda. The two parties are working out the detailed modalities on how the agreement shall be implemented”-Bagiire’s statement reads.
The deportees hosting deal comes at a time when Uganda is grappling with the over 1.2 million refugees from the neighboring countries who are now struggling after the US withdrew much support from such arrangements. Refugees now struggle to find what to eat, and other necessities.
Despite their growing numbers and the struggles to provide for them, the Pearl of Africa continues to allow in more from War hit countries like South Sudan, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo.
