Despite a court order clipping his powers as party president, Akena who has been campaigning went ahead to pick nomination forms at the Electoral Commission. His forms were picked by Oyam North legislator Dr. Eunice Apio Otuko last Friday.
Just the same day, another UPC member Joseph Ochieno stormed the Electoral Offices in Kampala and also picked presidential nomination forms also insisting he was the party’s presidential candidate for the upcoming general elections.
Now another 3rd UPC Member Denis Enap Adim is also set to pick nomination forms tomorrow as UPC’s presidential candidate. Enap is the lawyer whom court declared after booting Akena from seeking a 3rd term as UPC president.
UPC has for the last 15 years been embroiled in power struggles between Peter Walubiri and Jimmy Akena who insists he’s the rightful president in the party formed by his father 65 years. His mother Miria Kalule Obote was UPC’s presidential candidate in 2006 and 20 years later, her son too is trying to end Museveni’s grip to power.
In 2016, UPC formalized it’s agreement with the ruling government. This saw Akena’s wife Betty Amongi being named in Museveni’s cabinet as Minister of lands, Minister for Kampala and now Minister of Gender and social development.
Enap will join the over 175 Ugandans who have showed interest in ending Museveni’s four decade rule. Prominent among these are former presidential candidates DP president Norbert Mao, Nancy Kalembe and John Katumba. The others are Joseph Kabuleta (NEEP party) and Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine (NUP).
Elton Joseph Mabirizi who contested 2016 is also back in the race, president Museveni has also picked nomination to extend his rule to 45 years after being endorsed by his party unopposed last month.
