On Saturday 12th July 2025, the Chief Justice of Uganda Alphonse Owiny Dollo held a very successful thanksgiving in Agago district in an event which was graced by Uganda’s president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
At the event President Museveni praised Owiny Dollo for his distinguished service to the country where he has served in all the three arms of government as a delegate in the constituency assembly which made the 1995 constitution, to Minister for Northern Uganda to heading the Judiciary where he replaced Justice Bart Katurebe in August 2020.
Among the several dignitaries at the event was Minister for Constitutional affairs Norbert Mao who also doubles as the president of the Democratic Party (DP) Uganda’s oldest political party having secured another term last month at a chaotic Mbarara delegates’ conference early last month.
Mao volunteered to be an interpreter for Museveni who was using English at the event as the DP president translated in Acholi for the entire gathering which thronged Agago to attend Dollo’s thanksgiving also to clearly take Museveni’s message home.
In a video making rounds on social media, Museveni reached a point in his speech and took a swipe at people like Norbert Mao who chest thump in Democratic Party which the president earlier belonged to before quitting to start his own UPM and later to the bush with his NRA which later became UPDF and NRM.
“In 1962, i was already active a young activist and i was supporting a party called DP. So when i see people like Mao saying DP DP without Museveni, there’s no DP without Museveni. The moment i left DP, that was really the end of DP”- said Museveni as Norbert Mao the president of DP comfortably translated into Acholi.
The video has elicited mixed reactions online. Some are lashing out at Mao for shooting himself in the foot, some are asking him to resign from his position in DP while some are praising him for conceding to the president whom he’s serving as Minister even when his party members decided to halt the cooperation of DP and NRM.
