In the news this afternoon, the High Court has nullified the election of Erias Luyimbaazi Nalukoola as the Kawempe North legislator following a petition by NRM’s Faridah Nambi Kigongo who sought redress in the courts.
The Kawempe by election birthed by violence and marred with full scale military intervention happened on 13th March 2025 following the death of Muhammed Ssegirinya alias Mr. Update who died after a long battle with illness.

Nalukoola emerged the winner with 17000 votes while Nambi who came 2nd polled around 9000 votes and the rest of the 8 candidates came trailing including late Ssegirinya’s aide Muhmmamed Luwemba Luswa who polled less than 300 votes, musician Aga Naga who also got 200 votes and comic politician Moses Nsereko who came last with 32 votes.
Nambi ran to court claiming votes from 15 polling stations were not counted by the electoral commission despite reports suggesting that security operatives raided several polling stations and destroyed polling materials when counting was being conducted.
Delivering his judgement via email, Justice Benard Namanya set aside the election of Nalukoola and declared the Kawempe North MP seat vacant. The Judge also ordered the Electoral Commission which was a respondent in the same case to organize fresh elections as soon as possible.
Unless Nalukoola appeals this ruling, his stay in the house as Member of parliament might come to an end after a record two months period. And if he appeals, given the sluggish speed at the Court of Appeal, he might finish the term when he’s serving as a member of parliament.
