Nakawa magistrate’s court issued a production warrant to have Besigye and his co-accused Obed Lutale and Captain Denis Oola appear in court today morning at 9:00am over yet to be known reasons.
However, tensions flared as men in plain clothes stormed court and started punching Besigye’s supporters. The exchange of blows lasted for almost two minutes just before Besigye made entry to the court.
Besigye’s has been behind bars since November last year following his abduction from a Nairobi apartment. He was initially charged by the General Court Martial but later his cases were transferred to the civilian court following Supreme Court ruling which barred trial of civilians in military courts.
Besigye’s first bail application was shot down by Justice Rose Comfort Kania who revealed that despite Besigye having all the pre-requisites to be granted bail, she couldn’t grant him depending on the veracity of the cases.
His lawyers have since applied for another bail application which is yet to be fixed for hearing but Besigye is also supposed to be given mandatory bail since he has spent over 6 months on remand without being tried.
In the court martial, state had clearly indicated that it had all the implicating evidence to speed up Besigye’s trial where even audios were shared online accusing the four time Besigye of harboring plans to bring an end to Museveni’s four decade government through a coup.
The court martial had also charged Besigye with possession of a fire arm and rounds of ammunition but this case was dropped on the charge sheet presented in the Nakawa court. State however revealed that it intends to amend Besigye’s charge sheet.
