Just as Carol Moseley Braun said that “There are no permanent friends or permanent enemies, just permanent interests”, is exactly what happened today at Lubaga Cathedral in Kampala as Christians thronged the church for the Palm Sunday prayers but most importantly for the celebration of the Kabaka’s birthday.

The Kingdom chose the church as the location for His Majesty Ronald Muwenda Mutebi’s 70th Birth celebration and the event brought together several people including politicians from all walks of life.

Among the politicians present was National Unity Platform (NUP) principal Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine and his nemesis Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba who is the member of parliament for Nyendo-Mukungwe and the leader of his newly founded political bus Democratic Alliance (DA).

The sitting arrangement forced the two to sit together on the same chair and were seen talking to each other on several occasions through out the mass. This move has elicited mixed reactions with many saying the two can differ politically but they both remain Baganda paying allegiance to their King HRH Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.

This is the first time the Mpuuga and Bobi Wine have met each other face to face and interacted in over a year since their public bitter split in March last year when it came to light that Mpuuga and the other three commissioners scrambled and partitioned a whooping Shs1.7b among themselves as service award.

The Last Time Bobi Wine and Mpuuga publicly faced each other

Mpuuga took the lion’s share of Shs500m which his party said tantamounted to corruption and it shouldn’t have been Mpuuga to do that. Back and forth Mpuuga refused to apologize or even appear in the disciplinary sessions caused against him. The party would later write to Speaker Anita Among withdrawing his appointment as commissioner of parliament.

Anita Among declined the move. Bobi Wine fired Mpuuga as his Deputy President in charge of Buganda region. Since then both leaders have been throwing jibes and tantrums at each other whenever chance avails itself. With Mpuuga claiming that he made Bobi Wine politically while Bobi Wine insisting Mpuuga betrayed the struggle by acting corrupt.

Bobi Wine replaced Mpuuga with Butambala county legislator Muhammed Muwanga Kivumbi who is also chairperson of the Buganda parliamentary caucus in parliament. Mpuuga moved on and founded his own political group Democratic Alliance (DA) with his longtime political allies Abed Bwanika, Lubega Mukaaku and Mike Mabiike.

The two teachers early this year showed power and influence at the burial of former Kawempe North legislator Muhammed Ssegiyinya who was laid to rest in Kadugala in Mpuuga’s constituency. Mpuuga organized a pararel event few meters from the burial ground. He tried taking the body by force as Bobi Wine’s group stayed put and declined the move.

Mpuuga’s group is currently pushing for electoral reforms but with many political actors questioning the timing and wondering why he didn’t push for them while he was still leader of opposition and government’s readiness to support the much needed electoral reforms.
