President Museveni has blasted opposition legislators who are up in arms over a whooping Shs100 millions allegedly paid to his NRM members of parliament, independents and a section of some opposition legislators.

Sources privy to this matter have intimated to media that the Shs100m is an Easter to MPs for putting up a big fight in parliament over the coffee amendment bill which eliminated Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) and for the UPDF amendment bill which is set to be tabled before parliament to give the General Court Martial a new life to try civilians.

President Museveni who is the Commander in Chief (CiC) of the armed forces, his son Gen Muhoozi Keinerugaba who is the Commander of the Defense Forces (CDF) both openly disagreed with the January 31st Supreme Court ruling which stopped the Court Martial from trying Civilians.

Museveni would later summon the NRM parliament caucus over four times to state house who have since vowed to support the amendments going to be tabled before parliament by the Minister of Security. According Dr. Chris Baryomunsi the minister for ICT and National Guidance, cabinet on Monday this week approved the amendments and civilians will soon be back to the court martial to face trials there.

The leadership of parliament, the Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua have all denied knowledge of these funds claiming whoever has it should present it. Nosooner had they denied than the Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi posted a video of MPs thronging parliament with bags and sacks late in the night at parliament supposedly picking the money in question.

Opposition legislators led by the acting Leader of Opposition and Butambala legislator Muwanga Kivumbi signed a document distancing themselves from the said sinful payment and vowing to return it to the sender incase it’s given to them.

As the hullabaloo continues to ignite debates across the corridors of power, president Museveni has taken to his social media pages in a dossier in full defense of the alleged Shs100m to his Members of parliament. The president in a four-page dossier has blasted opposition for playing double standards while claiming to be anti-corruption crusaders.

“Last night, on UBC, I saw a cluster of Opposition MPs, led by one Kivumbi, expending a lot of energy on the supposed sh. 100 million per person given to MPs through classified funds, etc. I have one question: “Dear Sirs and Madams, have you ever heard of foreign funds being sent into Uganda to influence our politics in favor of the foreigners?” Secondly, the next question is: “If you are the anti-corruption warrior you claim to be, why have you never talked about these foreign funds?”- posted President Museveni

Ugandan parliament has for long been a den of deals, a hub of give me i give you while passing some laws and several especially from Museveni’s NRM has been paid for passing laws that favor Museveni’s presidency.

In 2005, legislators of that time received millions while removing term limits, in 2017 they received huge cash after removing age limit from the constitution. In 2023, they received millions after passing a supplementary budget and the gifting of cash envelopes continues in the Museveni regime. These are just a few of the deals that happen at Uganda’s parliament.
