In the news this morning, Dr. Kiiza Besigye and his co-accused Hajj Obed Lutale have been denied bail by the high in Kampala diminishing further their hopes of walking free anytime soon even after spending over 140 days behind bars.

Owing to the January 31st ruling which trimmed powers of the Court Martial from trying civilians, Besigye’s case was transferred to the civilian courts and was brought to the Chief Magistrates court in Nakawa where his cases were mentioned though possessing firearms were dropped.
He would later apply for bail in the High Court which ruling has been made today which was not in his favor. It’s not because the sureties were not substantial but the judge said because of the magnitude of the case, but Justice Rosette Comfort Kania wouldn’t grant him bail with fears that he might antagonize the investigations.
Speaking shortly after the ruling, a visibly disappointed Besigye’s lead counsel Erias Lukwago revealed that they will not seek redress in the court of appeal but will re-apply again for bail and also continue pursuing Besigye’s release in other courts even outside Uganda.
