The democratic party has initiated a move to end their cooperation with NRM ahead of the 2026 general elections whose road map has since began with parties commencing internal polls to select flag bearers.
The NRM and Democratic party inked a deal in July 2022 for cooperation on several fronts. The deal enabled party president Norbert Mao to occupy the then vacant cabinet ministerial position of Justice And Constitutional Affairs which he holds till today.
The deal further enabled DP Secretary General Gerald Siranda to sail through to the East African Legislative Assembly supported by the NRM legislators have the numerical strength in parliament.
Seems the honey moon is over after Fred Mukasa Mbidde the party National Vice President wrote a letter to his party president Norbert Mao informing him of the decisions of the National Executive Committee meeting which proposed an end to the NRM-DP Marriage.
“As you are aware, I proposed a significant motion to initiate the process of terminating our cooperation agreement with the National Resistance Movement. This motion is set to formally commence today, April 7, 2025 following the conclusion of the one month assessment period outlined in the alternative motion you presented on the same day…”the letter reads in part.
It’s however not clear if the termination of the cooperation agreement won’t end Mao’s tenure as Minister since the position is pegged on the same.
It’s not only DP which has a working relationship with the NRM, Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has also been having an on and off marriage with Museveni’s party and to this effect, Betty Amongi Akena is a direct beneficiary of the said agreement and has served in Museveni’s government for years now having started as Lands Minister, Minister for Kampala affairs and now Minister of Gender, Labor and Social Development.
The UPC agreement is also on rocks as the party president has already made it clear that he will contest against Museveni in 2026 but experts in politics see it as a way of re-negotiating his party deal with Museveni.
